Power outage on Fishers Island after transformer fire

Power was knocked out throughout Fishers Island in the Town of Southold for about two hours Wednesday after trees fell during a storm and a transformer caught fire in neighboring Connecticut, a utility company representative said.

The 4.2-mile Fishers Island, with a population of about 250, is located at the eastern end of Long Island Sound, two miles off the southeastern coast of Connecticut across Fishers Island Sound.

The outage originated in Groton, Connecticut, according to a spokeswoman for the Fishers Island Utility Co., and the power went out on all of the Island at about 10:30 a.m. for about two hours.

The spokeswoman said the transformer is owned by Groton Utilities in Connecticut, which she said supplies power to Fishers Island through the Fishers Island Utility Co.

“Everybody’s electricity just went down,” the spokeswoman added, but there were no reports of injuries. “There were trees down in Groton and the transformer caught on fire, and it kind of raised havoc, but now everything’s OK.”
