Sayville man charged with impersonating cop
A Sayville man is facing charges that he impersonated a police officer after he was stopped by the real cops in Islip Terrace, Suffolk County Police said.
During a traffic stop at 12:15 p.m. Friday on Lowell and Greenlawn avenues, police say Christopher Maier, 28, identified himself as Village of Saltaire police officer and displayed a lieutenant's badge. Officials, however, soon learned that Maier was not an officer.
Maier was later charged with second-degree criminal impersonation, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Maier is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Saturday.
Police are asking anyone who thinks they may have encountered Maier impersonating a police officer to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls remain anonymous.
