Tax cases send famed clothier to a year in federal prison

The owner of the well-known men's clothing store Mohan's Custom Tailors in Manhattan has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for tax fraud and failure to report a bank account in China, according to officials.
Mohanbhai Ramchandani, 67, of East Elmhurst, Queens, also was fined $75,000, sentenced to a year of home detention with electronic monitoring after prison, and 3 years of supervised release late Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Joseph Bianco at the federal court in Central Islip.
The sentence is part of an $8 million tax-evasion scheme, officials said.
Ramchandani pleaded guilty to similar charges in state court last year, officials said.
Ramchandani will serve his sentence in a federal prison, his attorney, James Druker of Garden City, said Thursday. Ramchandani already has paid back $8 million in federal and state taxes andpenalties, Druker said.
When Ramchandani pleaded guilty to the federal charges in August, Eastern District U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said he "built a successful business that made millions. Rather than live up to his financial obligations. . . . Ramchandani tried to evade not just his lawful tax reporting obligations but also the laws that protect our economy."
Mohan's, which advertises widely, included among its customers Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier, Rudy Giuliani and Ed Koch.
