John Murray, division chairman of the Transportation Communications Union, which represents ticket clerks, cleaners and others, stood with a group of workers in the Hicksville station parking lot, drinking coffee and chatting. A truck driver honked his horn in support of the few who held signs.

Murray, who works at Jamaica station, said he was disappointed talks fell through last night, but his workers are prepared to keep fighting. He thought the MTA would agree to the union’s demands before the work week starts.

“We were so close…we didn't think they were going to let us walk, but we couldn't give up what they wanted to offer us,” he said.

“I think that today they'll get a real taste of medicine,” he said, noting that Saturday in New York will be hosting the Brooklyn Marathon, the Yankees and Mets playing at Citi Field and Bruce Springsteen performing at Madison Square Garden.

Besides Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, Murray said picket lines are expected are expected at Babylon, Jamaica, Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and Penn Station.
