Bardabelias, Cafaro helps North boys win
Sparked by several strong individual performances, Valley Stream North edged Manhasset for the Nassau Class B boys indoor championship at St. Anthony's last week.
Leading the way for Valley Stream North was Thomas Bardabelias, who won the 1,000 meters in 2:37.99, Joe Cafaro, who took first in the 55 hurdles in 8.25 seconds and Chris Edouard, who won the 600 in 1:26.70.
Valley Stream North also scored with second-place finishes by Steven Barbuto (37.84) in the 300 (37.84) and Kendel Levy in the shot put (45-10) and a third-place finish by Joe Rossi (1:28.27) in the 600.
Valley Stream North's 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 teams took second and third, respectively.
Manhasset took second with 75 points and was led by Stephen Bourguet, who won the 3,200 in 9:54.39 and Kyle Howell, who took the high jump (6-0) and the triple jump (43-1 3/4).
Uniondale took home the Class A boys crown with 93 points, sparked by first-place finishes by Glen Forsythe in the long (22-6 1/4) and triple jumps (47-8 1/4) and Derrick Ingram in the 300 (36.09).
Massapequa took second with 65, led by Nick DeLuna's victories in the 1,000 (2:33.52) and 600 (1:23.83) and Andrew Valenski, who finished second in the 1,600 (4:29.62) and the 3,200 (9:27.5).
For the Garden City girls team, it was another year and another Class A title.
Eighth-grader Emma Gallagher led the way with first-place finishes in the 1,000 (3:01.6) and the 300 (41.39).
Molly Josephs won the walk (7:19.81) and Jennifer Gerland claimed the 3,000 in 10:56.7.
The Trojans finished with 111 points, ahead of second-place Uniondale's 66.
Leading the way for the Knights was Britney Webley with a first-place finish in the 55 hurdles in 8.4 and a win by Tawanda Francis in the long jump with a leap of 17-9 1/2.
Massapequa was third (47.5), MacArthur was fourth (46) and Farmingdale finished fifth (42).
The North Shore girls won the Class B title with 95 points, followed by Valley Stream North (75), Manhasset (51), Plainedge (47) and Hewlett (41).
Samantha Nadel won the difficult triple, taking the 3,000 (10:08.24), 1,000 (3:09.35) and the 1,500 (4:40.66) to lead North Shore.
Brianna Nerud was also a winner for the Vikings, taking first in the 600 (1:38.64). North Shore also was victorious in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.
