Bohemia garden renamed for late volunteer
Islip officials plan to rename a garden in Bohemia on Saturday after a longtime resident of the hamlet who volunteered throughout his community and helped farm a number of green spaces on Long Island.
The “Frank McPadden Memorial Garden,” on Smithtown Avenue and Sunrise Highway, will be officially named in honor of McPadden, who recently died of cancer.
“Frank McPadden was a shining example of the ultimate volunteer,” Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan said in a statement. “To recognize the work he did is the least we could do.”
McPadden worked with several organizations, including the Green Thumbs Society in Bohemia and the Long Island Dahlia Society. He became known as the “master gardener” and used his skills to work on a number of spaces such as the garden that will now carry his name, the St. John Nepomucene Church garden and the children’s garden at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank.
Officials will hold a dedication ceremony tomorrow at 2 p.m. on the lower level of St. John Nepomucene Church, 1140 Locust Ave., Bohemia.
