Leanne Iannucci went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs and three runs scored and Kaitlyn Davis went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the top-seeded Carle Place softball team over No. 3 East Rockaway, 15-3, in Game 1 of the best-of-three Nassau Class B finals at Mitchel Athletic Complex Monday.
The Frogs took an 11-0 lead in the first inning thanks in part to catcher Iannucci's two-run single. "With runners in scoring position she's the key player you want in that situation," Carle Place coach Chris Ceruti said.
The Frogs' Ashley Cole allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in the five-inning game. Torri Hytell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs, and Sam Burden and Brooke Topel each went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Carle Place (17-2-1). East Rockaway finishes 11-7.
"This is a team that plays like a team," Ceruti said. "Ashley and Leanne make everyone around them play better."
Game 2 is 4 p.m. Tuesday at MAC. A Carle Place win would give the program its fourth county championship in five years and eighth in school history.
"It's a veteran team that's used to being in this situation and I knew we had the edge because of that," Ceruti said. "This year I do feel that we were a powerhouse heading into this."
