Comptroller: Nassau recovered $56G from racing tax receipts

Nassau County is $56,000 richer because County Comptroller George Maragos found and recovered that sum from racing tax receipts owed by New York City, he said in a news release yesterday.

“The county is leaving no stone unturned to find and collect money owed. The old lax collection practices are unacceptable,” he said, noting the Belmont Race Track money was owed from 2008-09.

He said he has made recommendations to the county treasurer’s office, which collects the money, to strengthen its efforts.

“County Executive Edward Mangano is aggressively seeking money owed to the people ... and commends the comptroller for participating in these efforts,” Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin said.

The Maragos release said $4,648 is still owed from 2009 and that the city did not always send Nassau “its share of admission tax receipts within the 60 day statutory requirement.”

New York City officials did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
