Desiderio's single a winner for Wantagh
Dom Desiderio singled in Ryan Cacchioli with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and lifted Wantagh to a 6-5 win over first-place Garden City in Nassau Conference A-I baseball Tuesday.
Wantagh had a 5-3 lead after six innings, but Garden City's Brandon Samardich's two-out, run-scoring single tied the score at 5. Desiderio was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Cacchioli finished 4-for-5 with three runs for Wantagh (11-5).
Lindenhurst 2, Northport 1: Ryan Manning's two-out single scored Vin Valela in the top of the seventh to give Lindenhurst (12-2) a 2-1 lead in League I. Brad Witkowski improved to 3-0 and Nick Bianco picked up the save. Branden Fischer struck out eight in a complete game for Northport.
Commack 3, Ward Melville 0: Greg Andrews was 2-for-3 and singled in Rob Parson with the go-ahead run in the fifth to lead Commack (12-5) in League I. Rob Rose pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts to get the win.Plainedge 11, Lawrence 5: Anthony Graziano gave up one earned run, struck out eight and allowed five hits in six innings to lead undefeated Plainedge (17-0) in Conference AA-III. Anthony Pensato went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Tyler Manez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-2.
St. Anthony's 8, St. Dominic 2: Taylor Sperin threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and Justin Whalley went 3-for-4 with an RBI for St. Anthony's (8-6) in CHSAA. Dave Groeneveld went 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Knox 13, Solomon Schechter 0: Junior Jesus Colon pitched a no-hitter with no walks and 15 strikeouts to lead Knox (5-3). It was his fourth no-hitter of the season. Colon, Javioni Thomas, Angel Valdez and Jun Kang each had two RBIs.SOFTBALL
Pierson-Bridgehampton 14, Southold-Greenport 0: Junior Melanie Stafford pitched a five-inning perfect game with 10 strikeouts to lead Pierson-Bridgehampton (8-5) in League VIII. Stafford had three hits and scored three runs, Kaci Koehne went 3-for-3 and Kasey Gilgride 2-for-3 with two runs.
Connetquot 5, Sachem North 3: Emily Mazzaro hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Connetquot (12-4) in League II. Mazzaro finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Casey Shannon's two-run single tied the score at 3 in the fifth for Connetquot. Sophomore Kaitlyn Muhlenforth gave up three hits in a complete game for her first varsity win.
Bay Shore 8, Lindenhurst 0: Taylor McGowan struck out five and walked none in a four-hitter for Bay Shore (15-0) in League II. It was the fifth straight shutout and eighth of the season for McGowan, who improved to 13-0. Briana Coan had a two-run single in the first and Sarah Edwards was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple.
East Islip 5, Smithtown East 4: Pinch runner Alexa Martone scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a single by Alisa Cipolla for East Islip (14-2) in League III. Cipolla tied the score at 4 with a one-out, two-run homer in the sixth.
Bellport 5, Comsewogue 2: Rebecca Allen's two-run triple in the fourth gave Bellport (9-7 League III) a 5-2 lead. Katie Cohen pitched two scoreless innings for the save.Sayville 9, East Hampton 7: Kira Karl's two-out RBI single ignited a four-run top of the 10th for Sayville (11-4) in League VI. Emily Sellitti had a run-scoring triple and Nicole Petillo went 3-for-4 in the win.Carle Place 3, Long Beach 0: Ashley Cole hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to give Carle Place (15-2-1) a 2-0 lead in non-league. Amanda Machado scored on a passed ball later in the inning. Cole struck out 11, walked one and scattered five hits in a complete game.
