Monica Eugene is known for her rebounding prowess but she was called upon to fill the void on offense Tuesday night for Glenn. With Allison McKenna drawing most of Harborfields' attention, Eugene was able to find space on the inside and kept Glenn in the game in the first half.
"This was her best game, there's nothing close," Glenn coach Andrew Athanas said. "She kept us in the game."
McKenna had 12 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, Eugene had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Danielle Evers had 10 points, four rebounds and four steals to lead top-seeded Glenn over No. 2 Harborfields, 45-41, in the Suffolk Class A girls basketball final at St. Joseph's (L.I.). It is Glenn's first county title in five years and third in school history.
"It felt great that I was able to get open and score," said Eugene, who had nine of her 11 points in the first half. "I'm not really a scorer, I'm really known as a rebounder and to carry my team and help my team get this victory, it was fabulous."
The teams were tied at 25 at halftime and were in a battle that featured eight lead changes. When Evers made a basket with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter, the Knights never looked back. Harborfields got as close as 43-41 in the final two minutes, but McKenna scored to make it a two-possession game.
"Everybody thinks that we have the easier league and that they should get the higher seed but we showed tonight that we're the best team," McKenna said.
Lynn Zhong had 13 points and Kasey Stolba 12 for Harborfields (17-4).
Glenn (20-0) plays the winner of tonight's Suffolk BCD championship between Center Moriches and Shelter Island in the Suffolk Small Schools championship at 5 p.m. Friday at Farmingdale State. Glenn also plays the winner of Division and Garden City in the Long Island Class A championship at 6 p.m. March 11 at Hofstra.
