One of the best kept secrets in girls basketball this season has been Shelter Island's Kelsey McGayhey. The junior guard is averaging 21.8 points per game, the best on Long Island according to stats reported to Newsday.
"It's amazing, I didn't think I would go this far," McGayhey said. "My friend showed me [the stats online] and it was really exciting."
McGayhey scored a career-high 37 points in Shelter Island's 65-46 win over Southold on Tuesday, marking the fourth time she has scored 30 or more points this season.
"She's a scoring machine," Shelter Island coach Peter Miedema said. "The one thing that throws people off is she's lefthanded. She's tall but athletic, has a very nice jump shot; very tough to defend."
McGayhey, who also plays volleyball, has hopes of playing basketball in college and said she plans to attend some college camps this summer.
