Groups in communities with environmental or public-health issues can apply for grants to help address those concerns from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Office of Environmental Justice.

The office plans to award more than $1 million in Environmental Justice Community Impact Grants to groups to help with projects intended to address the impacts of environmental or public-health issues.

The money will be granted in awards of $2,500 to $50,000, and can be used for projects as diverse as urban forestry, air and water pollution monitoring, and training for green workers. Ten percent of the total grants awarded will be for projects involving community gardening, parks, and open space, according to the DEC.

Applications for the grants are due by March 8, and the DEC plans to hold a series of informational grant workshops throughout the state this month.
