Book Nook: 'Pescetarian Plan' review
THE PESCETARIAN PLAN: The Vegetarian + Seafood Way to Lose Weight and Love Your Food, by Janis Jibrin, MS, RD, with recipes by Sidra Forman. Ballantine Books, 355 pp., $26.
Health writer Janis Jibrin -- lead dietitian for Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey's trainer -- explains why you should be a pescetarian (the word comes from pesce, Italian for fish), a vegetarian who eats seafood. "Eat fish," she writes, "and you'll protect your heart, plus you'll stay smarter and happier and -- no joke -- have a better sex life."
The research, she writes, is "so compelling that I can't find another type of diet that can touch it." The pescetarian plan is "basically a Mediterranean diet that takes a pass on poultry and red meat."
THE SCOOP You'll eat fatty fish, such as Arctic char and salmon, three times a week. Worried about mercury? There's a guide on what to buy -- and avoid. You'll also eat plenty of legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits and veggies.
THE BOTTOM LINE Hate to cook? These recipes take 25 minutes or less.
