Book Nook: 'The Longevity Diet'
THE LONGEVITY DIET: The Only Proven Way to Slow the Aging Process and Maintain Peak Vitality - Through Calorie Restriction, (revised) by Brian M. Delaney and Lisa Walford. Da Capo Press, $14.95, 336 pp.
Remember Biosphere 2 - eight people living in a closed environment from 1991 to 1993 in Arizona's desert?
One was physician Roy Walford, who put the team on a calorie-restricted diet he'd researched after they'd had trouble growing food - and they lost weight, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure. He advocated calorie restriction to lengthen life.
You have to live in the real world - but this book, by Walford's daughter (he died in 2004 at 79 of Lou Gehrig's disease) and Delaney, president of Calorie Restriction Society International, might show you how to live lean.
THE SCOOPWhile some anti-aging animal experiments have been positive, according to the Mayo Clinic, "it's unclear whether people may benefit from a calorie-restriction diet the same way."
THE BOTTOM LINELike many diets, this ranges around 1,600 calories, stressing fruits, veggies and whole grains. Ask your doctor.
