Frank L. Kurre, a deacon and longtime board member of Catholic Health, will take over as president and CEO of the healthcare system, officials announced Wednesday.

Kurre, a financial and strategic advisor, replaces Gary Havican, who served as interim president since June when former CEO Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy stepped down after five years in the role.

He was appointed by Bishop John O. Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the corporate members of Catholic Health.

"Deacon Kurre brings a record of excellence from both his career and his vocation as a deacon and dedicated family man," Barres said in a statement. "His deep commitment to the mission of Catholic Health will be reflected in his service to the clinicians, staff and all who come seeking care."

Catholic Health did not provide information on Kurre's salary.

The health system operates five hospitals on six campuses, including Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, on Long Island along with nursing homes and outpatient services. It has been focused on expanding and updating its facilities while struggling with annual operating deficits.

"Catholic Health is a special organization with tremendous strengths and opportunities for the future," Kurre said in a statement. "Everything we do must remain rooted in the Catholic faith we proudly proclaim and in our commitment to delivering compassionate healthcare to all who come to us."

Havican will resume his role as the system's chief operating officer.

Last December, Catholic health opened a $500 million, 300,000-square-foot pavilion at Good Samaritan — its largest project to date.
