A Brooklyn-based food distributor is recalling a cold fish product after an investigation found it was potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. announced last week its 8-ounce packages of "Starfish Seafood Trio — Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut, and Trout" could be contaminated with the listeria.
The recalled product, which is in a vacuum-sealed plastic package, was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina, the Food and Drug Administration website said.
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets said the product was also distributed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to a news release.
Krasnyi Oktyabr is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the recalled product, the recall said.
"Consumers who have purchased the recalled Starfish Seafood Trio are urged not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund," the recall said.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA website said.
"Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women," the recall statement said.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the product.
The affected products have the lot number D139149161-153, an expiration date of Dec. 1, 2027, and a country origin of Latvia.
