As if the heartache of divorce weren't hardship enough, it appears that women enduring marital breakup may also have to deal with hair loss. New research reveals that the next strongest predictor of midline (central) hair loss among women after genetics is their marital status. Loss of a spouse through divorce or death raises the risk for thinning hair. "Most likely, stress is the aspect of a troubling divorce that appears to lead to hair loss among women," said study author Dr. Bahman Guyuron, chairman of plastic surgery department at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. Excessive drinking and/or smoking also appear to boost the risk.

Cash and a new sports car are drool-worthy, according to a recently published study examining how people react to nonedible consumption. People salivate when they desire material objects, the study, in the online Journal of Consumer Research, concludes. "Merely being exposed to the concept of money has been shown to have dramatic effects on behavior, and it has even been argued that money can be conceptualized as a drug," author David Gal of Northwestern University said in a news release, adding that salivating over objects may stem from a neurological pathway triggering the same reward bell in the brain.
