Explaining epilepsy and its causes
WHAT IS EPILEPSY?
Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures, or a brief, strong surge of electricity in the brain that lasts a minute or two, or more. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy.
CAUSES
It is caused by abnormal brain function but can also be triggered by other causes, such as head injury, brain tumors and oxygen depletion during birth.
MEDICATION
Anti-epileptic drugs successfully prevent seizures in the majority of people who take them regularly and as prescribed.
