TRENTON -- New Jersey reported its first case of fungal meningitis Tuesday in an outbreak tied to a steroid medication made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts.

The outbreak has sickened at least 119 people in 10 states and resulted in 11 deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

The New Jersey patient, a 70-year-old Cumberland County man, first went to the hospital Thursday, state officials said.

They said he received an injection of the steroid medication on Sept. 26 from Premier Orthopedics Surgical Associates in Vineland, just before the office learned of the drug's recall.

The patient was being treated with anti-fungal medication and is recovering, they said. -- AP
