Health briefs: Trim that fat to slim down
The key to a slimmer figure is not necessarily dieting, but just cutting back on fat intake, a new British study suggests. Researchers from the University of East Anglia found that simply replacing high-fat foods with low-fat alternatives helped people lose weight. Reducing fat intake also resulted in lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels. The study's authors suggested that the findings may play a critical role in global dietary recommendations, because being overweight or obese increases the risk for many cancers, heart disease and stroke.
Happy 100
Women stand a much better chance of becoming centenarians than men do, a new U.S. Census Bureau report shows. Of the 53,364 people age 100 or older in the United States in 2010, more than 80 percent were women, the report found. For every 100 centenarian women, there were only 20.7 men in that very select age group.
