Children between ages 8 and 15 who are in the upper half of their normal weight range are more likely than their leaner peers to become obese or overweight as young adults, research shows.

According to Children's Hospital Boston, parents should encourage healthy eating habits and realistic attitudes toward weight and diet.

The hospital offers these potential solutions for children who are overweight:

  • Having nutritional counseling.
  • Limiting portion sizes.
  • Participating in an appropriate exercise program.
  • Getting family support and encouragement.
