If riding a horse is your thing, it's a good idea to brush up on basic safety rules and to make sure you're wearing the right equipment.

The Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension mentions these riding safety rules:

  • Always wear a certified, approved helmet that fits properly.
  • Wear well-fitted boots with heels to keep feet from sliding through the stirrups. Also wear a protective vest and nonskid gloves.
  • Dress in bright colors, especially when riding in the woods and during hunting season.
  • Make sure all tack (saddle, bridle, girth, etc.) is clean, supple and in good condition with nothing broken.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and things that might spook a horse. Keep small children and dogs away.
  • If riding on a road, go in the same direction as traffic.
