School children are taught to follow the rules no matter where they are, and waiting for the bus is no exception.

The U.S. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration offers this advice:

  • Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early.
  • Line up at least three giant steps (approximately six feet) away from the curb.
  • Do not board until the bus comes to a full stop, the door is open and the driver says it's OK to board.
  • If you must cross the street in front of a bus, do so at least 10 feet ahead of the bus. You must make sure the driver can see you and you can see the driver.
  • Take care when boarding and exiting the bus, using handrails and making sure clothing or backpacks don't get caught.
  • If you need to retrieve something dropped near the bus, tell the driver first and wait for an answer.
