If you're a meat eater, take steps to make healthier, leaner choices and trim the fat.

The American Heart Association offers these suggestions:

  • Watch your intake of red meat (beef, lamb and pork), which contains saturated fats and cholesterol.
  • Skinless poultry, chicken, fish (especially salmon) and vegetable proteins are healthier choices.
  • Beans, split peas, lentils and black-eyed peas are cholesterol-free protein choices.
  • Cook meat by baking, grilling or broiling, and trim off visible fat before cooking.
