Some foods, small toys and objects can be choking hazards for babies and young children. That's why it's important to quickly recognize the warning signs of choking.

The U.S. National Safety Council mentions these common symptoms:

  • Having difficulty breathing (ribs and chest are pulled in), or being unable to make any sounds.
  • Crying or coughing weakly.
  • Having a bluish tint to the skin.
  • Making a high-pitched sound while inhaling.
  • Losing consciousness.
