Medicine Cabinet: Mind-boosting meals
Feeling bombarded by more new information than your brain can handle? You just got e-mail down pat, and now the kids want you to learn to tweet and text. Well, fear not, adult Luddites. You don't need a special tutor. Just sit down and eat. In no time, these mind-boosting meals will kick your brain back into high gear.
BRAINY BREAKFASTEggs are a smart choice. They're packed with the mineral selenium, which keeps your memory razor-sharp. Getting at least 55 micrograms of selenium a day can help you score as well on cognitive tests as people 10 years younger. After two eggs (14 micrograms each), a slice of 100 percent whole-wheat toast (10 micrograms), plus one Brazil nut, which packs 100 micrograms, you could be doing the crosswords in ink by lunchtime.
QUICK-WITTED LUNCH Put some turkey or tuna on the menu. Three ounces of tuna contain an impressive 63 micrograms of brain-boosting selenium; turkey has 27 micrograms. Then slather on some yellow mustard. It's got turmeric, which activates genes that work like a tiny vacuum in the brain, cleaning up waste that can destroy brain cells.
SMART SNACK Indulge in some cherries. They're rich in compounds that guard against brain-cell damage, so you'll stay sharp.
NOT-FOR-DUMMIES DINNERBroil salmon, trout or sole, and feel the omega-3s in these brain-friendly fish making your mind younger (maybe because they're anti-inflammatory). Don't forget your greens: The flavonoids in spinach, kale and collard greens can slow mental decline due to aging by as much as 40 percent.
