Ground spraying to control adult mosquito populations in parts of Fire Island is scheduled for Wednesday from 6 to 10 p.m., Suffolk County health officials said.

Spraying will cover all streets in the villages of Ocean Bay Park, Seaview and Ocean Beach, weather permitting, officials said.

The pesticide application is designed to limit the development of mosquitoes, which through bites can spread West Nile virus.

Chances of experiencing medical problems from the applications are low, health officials said, but residents may want to avoid exposure, with children and pregnant women especially advised to stay indoors during the treatment and for 30 minutes after.

More information is available through the county's Division of Vector Control at 631-852-4270, spraying information hotline at 631-852-4939 and at suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/HealthServices/PublicHealth/PreventiveServices/PesticideApplicationNotification.aspx.
