An advisory against bathing at 19 Nassau beaches has been issued by the county’s Health Department because of concerns about increased bacteria levels due to Monday’s heavy rainfall.

Health officials said the advisory — effective immediately — was issued as a precautionary measure for beaches known to be impacted by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall that can elevate bacteria to levels that exceed the New York State standard.

The advisory was expected be lifted at 8 a.m. Wednesday unless additional heavy rainfall or water samples reveal elevated bacterial levels.

Included in the advisory are the following 19 beaches: Centre Island Sound, Bayville; Creek Club and Lattingtown Beach in Lattingtown; Laurel Hollow Beach; Morgan Sound and Pryibil Beach, Glen Cove; North Hempstead Beach Park, Port Washington; Piping Rock Beach Club, Locust Valley; Ransom, Stehli and Soundside Beaches, Bayville; Theodore Roosevelt Beach, Oyster Bay; Sea Cliff Village Beach; Tappen Beach, Glenwood Landing; Biltmore Beach Club and Philip Healey Beach, Massapequa; Hewlett Point Beach, East Rockaway; Island Park Beach; and Merrick Estates Civic Association.
