The Northwell Health Dolan Family Health Center in Greenlawn is being replaced with a newly constructed facility in Huntington Station, a move that positions it in the heart of the community it serves.

The new facility, which is close to bus routes, is called the Northwell Family Health Center at Huntington. It will open on Monday.

Northwell Health officials say the move allows them to meet patients where they are while assisting in their overall health, whether that be a visit to a physician or their in-house food pantry.

“It's not just health in the exam room … it's health throughout their lifestyle,” said Lee Raifman, associate vice president of operations and administrative director of NFHC.

About 19% of the center’s walk-in patients are either undocumented immigrants or are self-pay, Northwell Health officials said. The center has more than 30,000 visits annually.

The new 17,932-square-foot facility provides services that include pediatric care and family medicine. It also has OB-GYN, ophthalmology, podiatry and HIV care.

There will be seven physicians, two nurse practitioners and one midwife.

Seeking to address social determinants of health, the center will have such services as nutrition assistance and social work counseling.

The cost to move the Dolan Family Health Center to the new building at the site of a Capital One Bank was roughly $10 million.

Dr. Nick Fitterman, executive director of Huntington Hospital, said it was time to move.

The Dolan Family Health Center in Greenlawn opened in 1995 in a foreclosed building. But the location was neither within walking distance of many patients nor close to a bus route. The Greenlawn site will become part of a Northwell cancer center.

Dr. William Gehrhardt, the center’s medical director, says the new space “is going to be the next level of evolution.”

When patients enter the facility, they will walk into the waiting area. From there, patients can be connected with a wide array of social services.

The new location has 28 general exam rooms plus an ultrasound suite, Northwell Health said. It will house other services such as backpack drives and a baby shower for expectant mothers.

Gehrhardt said he had taken care of multiple generations of the same family at the previous site — and hoped to continue doing so at the new location.

“The community keeps reproducing so we take care of the next generation also,” he said.
