The No. 1 step for preventing lung cancer? Don't touch, smell or chew tobacco. But even if you vigilantly avoid tobacco and secondhand smoke, there's more that you can do to put extra distance between you and the No. 1 cancer killer. That's especially important since 10 percent to 20 percent of people who get lung cancer never smoked. Here's what to try to trim your risk a bit more:

1. Have a tablespoon of peanut butter. Although taking high-dose vitamin E supplements may cause lung cancer, there's a 55 percent lower lung cancer risk in nonsmokers who get a lot of E from their diets - from foods including peanut butter, nuts and seeds.

2. Load up your salad with watercress. And throw in some broccoli, cabbage and kale. People who eat the most cruciferous vegetables have a 17 percent to 22 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer than people who eat the least. A compound in these veggies called isothiocyanates helps your body get rid of troublesome compounds before they can damage DNA. These cruciferous vegetables knock down breast cancer risk as well. One quick and easy way to get watercress: Drink a V8. It's one of the main ingredients of the juice.
