In its effort to help residents become tobacco-free, Suffolk County will be ramping up its smoking-cessation program next month, starting six new six-session classes that run through December, health officials said Wednesday.
Next month sees the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout on Nov. 21, a day on which people are encouraged to either quit or make a plan to quit.
"Quitting smoking is hard," said Dr. James L. Tomarken, the county's health commissioner, "but with support, a person can greatly increase his or her chances of being successful."
Varying numbers of classes are offered each month free of charge, a health department spokeswoman said.
