Long Island is one of the epicenters for ticks and tick-borne diseases.

There are several types of ticks on Long Island and each can carry different kinds of bacteria and viruses that can cause illness. For some people, the bite can also trigger a meat allergy. Not every tick, however, is infected.

If you are bitten by a tick, remove it as quickly as possible (removing a tick within 24-36 hours can lower the risk of Lyme infection), save it in a bag or pill bottle and contact your doctor for advice.
