Tuna recalled after salmonella infections

Of the 116 reported salmonella cases, New York has 24 incidents among 20 states and the District of Columbia, the FDA said.

Two cases have been confirmed in Nassau, said Mary Ellen Laurain, spokeswoman for the county health department. One person developed diarrhea and fever on March 8, Laurain said. Details were not available on the other case late last night.

California-based Moon Marine USA Corp., also known as MMI, is recalling 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna product that is scraped off the bones and looks like it's ground.

Many people were infected after eating "spicy tuna" sushi, the FDA said. The yellowfin may also be used in making ceviche, sashimi and other raw fish dishes, the agency said.

The symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection, the FDA said. The victims usually recover without treatment, though the symptoms may become so severe that hospitalization and antibiotics are needed to stop salmonella from spreading to the blood and rest of the body, the agency said. No deaths have been reported, the FDA said.

The tuna is labeled Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA, but the product is often broken down into smaller lots and passed through several distributors, making it harder for restaurants, grocery stores and consumers to identify its origin, the FDA said.
