Tuna recalled following salmonella cases
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a voluntary recall of raw yellowfin tuna after many people were infected with salmonella after eating "spicy tuna" sushi.
California-based Moon Marine USA Corp., also known as MMI, is recalling 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna product that is scraped off the bones and looks like it's ground.
Many people were infected after eating "spicy tuna" sushi, the FDA said. The yellowfin may also be used in making seviche, sashimi and other raw fish dishes.
New York has the most cases of salmonella poisoning from raw yellowfin tuna, the FDA said. Of the 116 reported salmonella cases, New York has 24 incidents among 20 states and the District of Columbia, the FDA said.
Suffolk has nine cases, said county spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter. Two cases have been confirmed in Nassau, said Mary Ellen Laurain, spokeswoman for the county health department One person developed diarrhea and fever on March 8, Laurain said. Details were not available on the other case late last night. .
