West Nile found in Nassau mosquito samples

West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito samples from four trap locations in Nassau County -- Bayville, Lakeview, Massapequa and Mineola, county health officials said Monday. And Suffolk County raised from eight to 10 its count of mosquito samples testing positive.

In Nassau, mosquito surveillance will intensify where the virus has been detected and will continue at all 42 trap sites, said a news release from the Nassau County Department of Health.

As part of their mosquito control efforts, the county health and public works departments will also continue inspecting breeding sites and, when necessary, applying larvicide, the release said.

Suffolk County health officials said that mosquito samples from Port Jefferson Station and East Setauket tested positive for the virus, along with those already reported in Farmingville, Nesconset, Amagansett, Northport, Dix Hills, West Babylon and Gardiner County Park in Islip. A dead crow in Northport also tested positive, health officials said.
