The Half Hollow Hills West boys 4 x 400-meter relay team of Abias Myrtil, Justin Ma, Justin Connor and Daniel McCord set a Long Island record Sunday when they finished in 3 minutes, 18.93 seconds, good for third at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at The Armory in Manhattan.

In Saturday's 4 x 200, the same four runners did not finish after one of the runners dropped the baton.

But Hills West's relay specialists rebounded to receive All-American honors one day after their disappointment.

"We couldn't quit," Hills West coach Jim Christian said. "They knew if they ran like they were capable, there was a possibility of them placing.

"Their time surpassed my expectations of them. They are ecstatic."

Thomas Awad of Chaminade took 16th (4:20.51) in the mile. Westbury's Owen Skeete placed 23rd in the mile (4:25.14) after a fifth-place finish in Friday's 5,000-meter run (15:06.80).

GIRLS TRACK

Holy Trinity's Colleen Schmidt finished second in the two-mile run (10:25.22) and St. John the Baptist's Anne Carey came in 14th (10:45.01).

St. Anthony's Olicia Williams finished third in the 800 (2:07.81) and Rachel Paul of Sachem East took seventh in 2:10.62.

North Shore's Samantha Nadel placed fourth in the mile (4:49.95). Nadel's teammate, Brianna Nerud, came in 10th (4:53.25). Ward Melville's Mary Kate Anselmini finished 13th (4:56.75).

Danielle Opatovsky of Shoreham-Wading River won Saturday's one-mile walk (7:14.72). It is the fastest time walked on Long Island this season.
