Horn's hustle gives Bay Shore win in AA
Angelica Horn scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as No. 1 Bay Shore defeated No. 9 Connetquot, 3-2, Friday in the Suffolk Class AA softball quarterfinals.
Michelle DeVito (2-for-4) led off the inning with a double and Sara Edwards followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Taylor McGowan allowed six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in nine innings. With runners on second and third and no outs in the top of the eighth, Bay Shore (22-0) threw out the runner at home on a squeeze attempt and then tossed out the runner at second as she tried to advance. Bay Shore will host No. 13 Smithtown East at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Connetquot is 15-6.
West Babylon 6, Half Hollow Hills West 5: Melissa Frederick's double with one out in the top of the eighth scored Jessica Peace from third to put No. 7 West Babylon up 6-5 over No. 2 Hills West in the Class AA quarterfinals. Hills West (20-2) tied it at 5 on Jessica Kleet's sacrifice fly in the seventh. Nikki Wilkinson went 3-for-5 with an RBI. West Babylon (18-3) will play at No. 6 Deer Park at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Smithtown East 7, Longwood 5: Francesca Busa's two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth broke a tie at 5 to win it for No. 13 Smithtown East in the Class AA quarterfinals. Andrea Klarman hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it for No. 5 Longwood (15-7). Mackenzie Buckley went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Corinne Vazac went the distance for Smithtown East (14-8), which will play at No. 1 Bay Shore at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Deer Park 4, Northport 1: Aly Dzierzynski's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth snapped a tie at 1 and led No. 6 Deer Park past No. 14 Northport (11-10) in a Class AA quarterfinal. Jacki D'Aries followed with another sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2, and Sam DeMarco added a two-out RBI single to provide the margin of victory. Lisa Bonacasa pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts for Deer Park (16-6).
Babylon 3, Center Moriches 0: Brianna Goodfellow's triple in the third inning put No. 1 Babylon (18-3) up 1-0 over No. 2 Center Moriches in Game 1 of the Class B final. Tiana Giuliano pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk. Christine Desiderio hit a run-scoring double in the fourth inning to make it 3-0 and added three stolen bases. Game 2 will be played at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Center Moriches.
Port Jefferson 2, Pierson 1: Michiko McGivney scored from third on an error to win it for No. 1 Port Jefferson (14-3) in Game 1 of the Class C final. McGivney pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks. Rene Marchewka (1-for-3) scored the tying run on an error in the bottom of the sixth. Pierson's Melanie Stafford allowed no earned runs with three hits in the complete game. Port Jefferson will travel to Pierson for Game 2 at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
