Huntington band parents deal with budget cuts

The Band Parents Association in the Huntington school district is holding a garage sale to raise money for the Huntington Blue Devil Marching Band.

About $30,000 in funding was cut from the program in the 2011-12 budget.

One hundred families associated with the band are donating items for the June 18 sale, which will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school. A farmers’ market will also be selling fruit and vegetables.

“Arts are very important in our schools and everybody should help to try to keep these programs in place,” said Martha Ironman, band parents association co-president. “I don’t want to see these things taken away from our kids.”

The association has raised $25,000 toward its $36,000 goal through bake sales, a casino night and a local department store fundraiser.

The money raised will help pay for transportation for students, equipment, the cost to rent portable lights for the high school field and other expenses.

The high school is at the corner of Oakwood and McKay roads.
