The East Hampton Town Board took action last week to add a restriction to the bike tours that have become common summer events: Don’t bring cans of spray paint.

Tour organizers have used spray paint to mark directions on pavement, which in some cases have lasted two years.

Katie Casey, who attended the Thursday night meeting to talk about the issue, praised one recent tour group that used peel-off colored flags to mark routes for riders, who can easily get lost on local roads.

She added that other groups have left directions by spraying them in big white letters on road surfaces, including one that read “50 miles to Montauk."
