Jericho scores three in sixth inning to beat Roslyn

Errors and plays at the plate made for an exciting ballgame between Roslyn and host Jericho in the teams Conference ABC-III meeting Friday.
The one baserunner who avoided the tag of Roslyn's Kate Kozuch was Lianne Condon, who scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice by Marina Egbaria to cap a three-run sixth inning for the Jayhawks in their 8-7 victory.
Kozuch was part of two putouts behind the plate, the same as Jericho's Carlie Orenstein. Both teams made five errors in the field that led to key runs earlier.
"It's a common thing. Miscommunication," said Kozuch, who went 3-for-4, with two RBI and a run. "It's like a domino effect. One thing leads to another."
Orenstein saw it firsthand in her first at-bat. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, the Jayhawks' senior catcher reached on an infield error, before coming around to score on Egbaria's RBI single.
Starter Lindsay Divack also got to first on a booted ball in the infield, leaving it to designated player Bailey Donovan to move her on home on another kicked ball in the infield.
"I just knew I had to back my team up," Divack said. "I knew I had to keep my head in the game."
After one inning of play, Jericho led 3-1. Kozuch drove in shortstop Rachel Murillo for the game's first run.
"I think it was just one of those games," said Orenstein, who scored three runs and reached base in all four of her plate appearances. "It was very intense. I think we did the best we could."
Jericho (12-2, 9-1) and coach Jim Whelan weren't going to make excuses for the team's mishaps in the field, but he did note that their was some shuffling with the lineup due to the absence of starting shortstop Nikki Micelotta, who sprained her ankle in the Hewlett game.
"No excuses. We got to play better than that," Whelan said. "I'm always pleased with the lineup. We've hit in big spots all year."
Roslyn (2-9, 2-7) put a five spot on the board in the top of the fourth inning to lead 7-3, courtesy of RBI singles by shortstop Rachel Murillo, designated player Jenna Litt, Kozuch and starter Nicole Lang, who felt the Bull Dogs should have closed the game out.
"I think we could have won," Lang said. "It was a really good game. We had a nice rally there. It was really exciting."
