How ironic: Allen sticks up for Polanski

I find it odd that Newsday would print an article stating that Woody Allen is sticking up for Roman Polanski . Polanski was charged with drugging and raping a 13-year-old and pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, but was never punished for his crime. Allen allegedly took nude pictures of his girlfriend Mia Farrow's daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, was having an affair with her and eventually married her. He was a father figure to Soon-Yi, as she was being raised by Mia Farrow and Allen, along with the other adopted and biological children of the couple. Woody is sticking up for Roman?!

Freezing Super Bowl? Not for this fan

I have mixed emotions about the new open-air Meadowlands stadium hosting the 2014 Super Bowl during a time of year when the average pre-wind-chill temperature is 33.6 degrees . In their effort to land the game, the Jets and Giants are actually touting the cold as a positive.

Nobody would love a New York Super Bowl more than I. But both teams severely damaged that chance when they mindlessly agreed to build a new stadium without a dome. Frankly, when anyone says they'd rather watch or play a football game under frigid conditions, they're lying. Whether we want to admit it or not, humans - both fans and players - respond far better to a windless, climate controlled, 68-degree environment.

Let's 'count up' days to pressure Albany

Instead of counting down the number of days until LeBron James is a free agent , how about counting up the number of days the State Legislature is late with the state budget? Is legislative dysfunction so much a part of everyday life in New York that it's not even worth a headline?

How about putting some pressure on the least productive state workers in New York by interviewing one per day and asking them what they're doing every day while the state waits for their backroom deals to be made?

Sad day if Belmont is forced to close

It's disturbing to hear that the New York Racing Association may not have the funding to continue operations at Belmont Park . Belmont is one of the finest tracks in the country, and we on Long Island are fortunate to have it. It is not only the home of the final leg of the Triple Crown, it is the home of many employees and horses.

My grandfather took my father there, and my father took me. I hope that our State Legislature will find a way to ensure that horse fans don't have to leave the state to experience this great sport. It would be sad to not have the opportunity to share those great moments with my son.
