LI group for homeless receives $250G grant
A Long Island organization committed to eliminating homelessness has received a $250,000 grant to aid in its mission.
The nonprofit Long Island Coalition for the Homeless has received a grant from the Island Outreach Foundation, a private philanthropic organization in Suffolk County. The coalition stated that the money will be put toward construction costs for their new Community Resource Center in Amityville. The center, which is slated to open next year, will house 10 nonprofit organizations that provide housing and other services for the homeless as well as veterans.
“We will be creating a ‘one stop’ for a variety of services, case management, counseling, housing services, and employment training and placement services,” Charles Russo, chairman of the board, said in a statement.
The coalition works with nonprofits that provide housing and services for the homeless and at-risk populations in order to provide direct assistance. According to the coalition’s latest figures from January 2012, there are more than 3,300 homeless on Long Island.
