Mercy's Stepnoski wins duel of no-hitters
Mercy's Pat Stepnoski struck out 14 in his first career no-hitter Tuesday. He was matched nearly pitch-for-pitch by Greenport's Sean Hansen, who also threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
But it was Stepnoski and Mercy that prevailed, 1-0, in the League VIII baseball game after Tom Kretz scored the winning run on a delayed steal of home in the second inning. It was Mercy's first no-hitter since 2008, coach Ed Meier said.
Plainview JFK 10, Herricks 0: Seth Noreman threw a no-hitter, walked two and struck out four in his first varsity start and Gil Doremus went 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs, and two RBIs for Plainview JFK (2-0) in Nassau Conference AA-II.
Sachem North 1, Bay Shore 0: Brian Hennelly struck out six and walked none in a two-hitter for Sachem North (2-0) in League II. Hennelly picked off a Bay Shore runner at first base in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Nick Teta's sacrifice fly scored Tom Klingel in the top of the seventh for the game's only run.
Mattituck 2, Center Moriches 0: Steve Ascher tossed a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and three walks to lift Mattituck (4-0) in League VII. Travis Zurawski had a run-scoring single in the top of the third to give Mattituck a 1-0 lead.
Bellmore JFK 4, Valley Stream Central 0: Andrew Wood struck out six in a four-hitter and Noah Shullman had two hits and two RBIs for Bellmore JFK (2-0) in Conference AA-II.
Clarke 2, Island Trees 1: John Jarosz's sacrifice fly drove in Chris Appell with the go-ahead run in the third for Clarke (7-0) in a Conference A-VI game that was shortened to five innings because of darkness.
Oyster Bay 4, Locust Valley 3: Robbie Morgan scored on a double by Phil Mihlstin in the bottom of the fourth to lift Oyster Bay (5-0) in Conference BC. Mihlstin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Chris Kelly struck out seven in seven innings for the win.
SOFTBALL
Island Trees 1, Sewanhaka 0: Taylor Tedeschi struck out 10 and scattered five hits and Nicole Pellegrino scored on an error in the bottom of the third for Island Trees (4-1) in Conference A-I.
Wantagh 2, Bethpage 1: Christine Keifer drove in Emma Ryder on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to give Wantagh (3-2) a 2-1 lead in Conference A-II. Jaclyn Vicente struck out five and walked one for the win.
Bayport-Blue Point 14, Southampton 5: Lauren Petersen went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and four RBIs for Bayport-Blue Point (5-0) in League VII. Tammy Vermulen had three hits and two RBIs.
Pierson/Bridgehampton 13, Mercy 1: Kaci Koehne went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and four runs and Alexa Lanpiere had three hits and two runs scored for Pierson/Bridgehampton (4-1) in League VIII.
