Nassau to get nearly $15M reimbursement from FEMA for Sandy-damaged sewage plants

County Executive Edward Mangano has announced that Nassau is in line to receive nearly $15 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reimburse county costs associated with returning wastewater treatment plants to pre-superstorm Sandy operations.

Mangano said in a statement that the county, working with Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), New York Democratic senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, “has secured FEMA dollars to ensure hurricane damaged wastewater plants are swiftly returned to operational condition and that necessary long-term hardening plans are developed while additional funds for mitigation construction begin to flow.”

As a result of flooding caused by Sandy, 41 of 57 sewage pumping stations in Nassau were damaged. Four of five wastewater treatment plants also sustained damage, along with areas of the sanitary collection system.
