Nassau Election Day checklist
Polls
Election Day is Tuesday. Polls will open in Nassau County at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
Eligible voters
Residents who are registered voters with the Nassau County Board of Elections are eligible to cast ballots. A registration may have been canceled or put on an inactive list if the registrant has not voted in several years. If voters arrive at the polls and find they are not on the list of eligible voters, they may still vote by affidavit, and its validity will be investigated. Election officials urge voters who have not received a voter registration postcard in the mail to call 516-571-2411 to check eligibility and verify their polling place. Voters who have moved since the last time they voted and have not re-registered under their new address may call 516-571-2411 to find their new voting place.
The procedure
Voting instructions and a sample ballot are posted at all polling places. Election officials are available to help in working the new voting machines. Judges will be available for election-related rulings throughout the day and night. Sample ballots appear in English and Spanish. A Spanish interpreter is available at designated polling areas based on census numbers or one is available at the headquarters by phone.
Absentee ballots
Voters must go in person to the Nassau County Board of Elections to obtain an absentee ballot by 5 p.m. Monday. The address is 240 Old Country Rd., Mineola, fifth floor.
Write-in voting
To vote for a person whose name is not on the published ballot, voters may write directly on the new ballots. Election officials are available to help. Be sure to spell the name correctly and add no extra marks.
Polling places
The Nassau County Board of Elections has mailed out postcards with voting sites. Voters also may call 516-571-2411 for any questions about polling places.
Disabled voters
Each polling place will have a handicapped-accessible voting machine. The machines, which can accommodate wheelchairs, have tactile voting for the blind and sip-and-puff or rocker panels for quadriplegics.
