Andre Poineau’s photo of iced-over Lake Charlevoix goes viral

No, this photo is not an optical illusion and it hasn’t been edited in Adobe Photoshop. This photo is of a crystal clear frozen lake in Michigan.
Six nights of no wind and below freezing temperatures by Lake Charlevoix made for an incredible photo. Andre Poineau of Boyne City, Michigan, shared the image on Facebook on Jan. 15.
While some commenters are convinced it’s impossible, Andy Poineau promised in a Facebook comment that the ice was real and about 2 inches thick.
Gene Morauski wrote on Facebook, “I would not know if this is photoshopped but I live on Okauchee Lake in WI and I have seen the same thing in my shallow bay. It is surreal.”
Michael J. Davis commented, “From birth till now, I have NEVER seen the ice like that. There must not have been a breath of wind when it froze...wish I was up there to see it!”
Jia Wang, a research ice climatologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, told USA Today that the sediments in water make ice look cloudy when it freezes while it’s windy.
“It has to be cold and very still to get that crystal-clear ice,” he told USA Today.
The photo was also posted to Physics-Astronomy.com’s Facebook page and has been shared more than 66,000 times.
