Led by gun-control maven Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), the Long Island delegation to Congress has thrown its support behind legislation to address gun violence. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) has introduced a background-check bill. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) is poised to reintroduce a measure to stop bad guys from making undetectable plastic guns using 3-D printers.

For enthusiasm, none matched Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton), who's co-sponsoring no fewer than 14 gun-related bills. "I am a realist. I don't have any expectation that all of these are going to see the floor of the House or even get a hearing in committee," he said. But, Bishop said, each broaches an important issue he wants to see addressed.-- Tom Brune
