ARIZONA: Newspaper castigates pols

The state's largest newspaper criticized Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl and other elected officials in a rare front-page editorial Sunday, saying the politicians had failed to find solutions to illegal immigration. The state has become the target of calls for boycotts since adopting a law that requires police to question people's immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're here illegally. "The federal government is abdicating its duty on the border. Arizona politicians are pandering to public fear," The Arizona Republic said in a full-page editorial. "The result is a state law that intimidates Latinos while doing nothing to curb illegal immigration."

MASSACHUSETTS: Quick fix on water pipe

Crews made faster-than-expected progress Sunday repairing a broken pipe that had cut the clean water supply to 2 million Boston-area residents, prompting Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to urge schools, businesses and commuters to resume their normal routines as the workweek began. A boil-water alert remained in effect for Boston and 29 surrounding communities.

NEBRASKA: Goldman defended again

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger again defended Goldman Sachs Group Inc. on Sunday, saying faulty government regulations are to blame for most of the economic turmoil of the past few years, not investment banks. Berkshire Hathaway's top two executives met with reporters a day after taking questions before a crowd of about 37,000 at the Omaha company's annual meeting. Buffett said he has no plans to sell the $5 billion in preferred shares of Goldman held by Berkshire.

ALASKA: Pumping oil from '52 wreck

Diving crews have removed more than 10,000 gallons of oil from the 369-foot Princess Kathleen, which ran aground on Point Lena in 1952. In addition to pumping out bunker oil, a heavy fuel used mainly in ships, divers have recovered nearly 1,000 gallons of oil that was free-floating in the wreck.
