A Canadian woman is in custody after federal authorities say she tried to enter the U.S. illegally by kayaking across the Niagara River near Buffalo.

The Buffalo News reports U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said Wednesday that U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted by Canadian police that a woman was kayaking across the river from Ontario toward Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, New York, just north of Buffalo.

Officials say 32-year-old Olivia Leigh Suriani was apprehended as she approached a taxi near the park.

Suriani appeared before a U.S. magistrate in Buffalo on a charge of illegal re-entry. She's being held pending a detention hearing Friday.
