Facts about Orlando gunman Omar Mateen

As authorities try to piece together the motive of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen, here is what is being reported about the central figure in the attack:

• Mateen's ex-wife said his family was from Afghanistan but that her ex-husband was born in New York, The Associated Press reported. He lived as a child in Flushing, Queens, and in Westbury. His family later moved to Florida.
• Mateen, who shot and killed 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, may have also planned to attack other gay-friendly locations in and around the Orlando area, a law enforcement source said. “He did show an interest in other locations as potential targets,” the source said.
• The FBI’s Ronald Hopper told AP that Omar Mateen was 29 and an American citizen who lived in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and was not under surveillance at the time of the shooting.
• Mateen cheered the collapse of the World Trade Center while watching the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on TV in his high school classroom, a childhood acquaintance said. Aahil Khan, 28, recalled Mateen telling him he'd been suspended for "cheering" in class at Martin County High School in Florida as students watched the 9/11 attacks unfold.
• The shooter had called 911 shortly before the attack and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, multiple news outlets reported, citing unnamed law enforcement officials. The calls have become federal evidence, according to Hopper and AP.
• Mateen purchased at least two firearms legally within the past week or so, Hopper told AP. All of the dead were killed with an assault rifle, officials said. He also had some sort of "suspicious device," the police chief said.
• Per AP, Florida records showed he had a firearms license obtained in 2011, and that was due to expire in September 2017.
• Mateen was a licensed security guard in the state of Florida, according to AP. He was a security guard with a firm called G4S, and in a 2012 company newsletter, he was described as working in West Palm Beach, according to AP.
• G4S confirmed his employment in a statement to the Palm Beach Post: ”We are shocked and saddened by the tragic event that occurred at the Orlando nightclub. We can confirm that Omar Mateen had been employed with G4S since September 10, 2007. We are cooperating fully with all law enforcement authorities, including the FBI, as they conduct their investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the friends, families and people affected by this unspeakable tragedy."
• Hopper told AP the shooter in 2013 made inflammatory comments to co-workers, and that Mateen was interviewed twice, but he called those interviews inconclusive.
• In 2014, Hopper told AP, officials found that Mateen had ties to an American suicide bomber, but he said the contact was minimal and it did not constitute a threat at that time.
• Mateen's father, Mir Seddique, told NBC News that his son became angry when he saw men kissing a couple of months ago. His father said that might be related to the assault.
• The Washington Post reports that Seddique has posted videos on a channel called Payam-e-Afghan that supports the Afghan Taliban. He “appears to be portraying himself as the president of Afghanistan,” according to the Washington Post report.
• AP reports that Mateen graduated from River Community Collete in 2006.
• Between 2001 and 2006, he worked at least eight jobs, including at a Publix grocery store, Circuit City, Walgreens and Chick-Fil-A.
